For this essay you will read the journal articles and textbook sources provided and write a 4-page essay in which you answer and analyze the following question:
On a scale of 1-10 (1 being not representative at all), how representative was the Georgia colony’s position on the Stamp Act of its place in the American colonies? Why is it that number? [5 IS NOT AN OPTION]
Focus Questions/Topics:
You are not to answer these questions directly, they are provided only to stimulate your thinking on the assignment (do NOT use these as subheadings in your essay and do not answer them in turn like a worksheet):
• What was the Stamp Act?
• When was the Stamp Act enacted? Who enacted the Stamp Act?
• What were the provisions of the Stamp Act?
• What was the Georgia colony’s place in colonial America when the Stamp Act was enacted?
• How did colonial America respond to the Stamp Act?
• Was Georgia’s response to the Stamp Act consistent with the other colonies?
• What actions did Georgia take in response to the Stamp Act?
• What was the position of Georgia’s leaders on the Stamp Act?
• Did Georgia’s position on the Stamp Act ever change?
In this essay you are evaluating how representative the Georgia colony’s position on the Stamp Act was of its place in the American colonies. You are to directly evaluate how representative the colony’s position was on a 1-10 scale (5 is not an option) and support your answer with specific examples and events; do not straddle the fence or be ambiguous about your evaluation. You should present your evaluation in your first paragraph, and the rest of your essay is the analysis (prove that was the colony’s representative level; why was the colony’s representation that level?) that supports your evaluation; do not simply write a narrative of events (this happened, then this happened, then this happened….). Use 12pt. font (Times New Roman), one-inch margins, and double-space your essay; citations should be done in the Chicago/Turabian format; notes should be endnotes. Your essay should be at least 4 full pages in length (not counting endnotes), but feel free to write more. I will grade your essay on: 1) definitively evaluating the colonial relationship on a 1-10 scale and providing support and analysis for your answer; 2) the logic and coherence of your answer and analysis; 3) writing and grammar. The only sources you are using for this essay are those listed, use no other sources.
• Chapters 1, 2 in Georgia; documents and essays in chapters 1, 2 in Empire State
• “The Stamp Act in Colonial Georgia” article
• Governor Wright’s Stamp Act correspondence from Colonial Records of the State of Georgia.
